Many of us are familiar with olive oil and its virtues, but few are aware of the impressive benefits of olive leaf extract (OLE). Also referred to as oleuropein, the name of its main component, olive leaf extract obtained from the leaves of the olive tree — Olea Europaea. Many believe that it helps prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses.

It is proven that olive leaf extract is perfectly safe and is widely used in traditional medicine in countries such as Greece, Spain, France, Turkey, Israel, Morocco and Tunisia. In Egypt it is used for hundreds and even thousands of years. Usually it is consumed in the form of supplements and in tea form.

Cardiovascular disease

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States, Europe and Asia. Unfortunately, as more countries adopt the Western way of life, refusing the diet of their ancestors, heart disease will continue to progress. In the United States alone cardiovascular disease annually kills nearly 1 million people.

One of the factors in the development of cardiovascular diseases is advanced glycation end products. In a study conducted by Dr. Navarro Mata (Mata Navarro) and her colleagues, whose results were published in the journal Food Research International in 2016, it has been proven that olive leaf extract prevents formation of advanced glycation end products, thus helping to prevent cardiovascular disease.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease. More than 1 billion from 7.6 billion inhabitants of the globe have high blood pressure is diagnosed when systolic blood pressure reaches 140 mm Hg. art. and diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg. art. and more.

Research 2016, described in the journal Food & Function, proved that olive leaf extract can help reduce blood pressure. A study conducted in 2011 edition of phytomedicine is demonstrated that olive leaf extract taken two times a day in a dose of 500 mg, can lower blood pressure similar to the pharmaceutical drug captopril in a dose of 25 mg twice a day. Any side effects while taking the supplements is not revealed.

Diabetes

Diabetes type 2 diabetes, or diabetes as it is often called, is a disease that affects millions of people around the world. People diagnosed with diabetes, suffer high content of sugar (glucose) in the blood, causing oxidative damage to blood vessels, nerves and organs such as kidneys and eyes. An example of such oxidation is the corrosion of the car exposed to the weather. Diabetes increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, foot amputation and kidney failure.

Ninety-five percent of patients with diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes, and five percent from type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is primarily a disease related to lifestyle, while type 1 diabetes due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreas.

The polyphenols contained in olive leaf, improve insulin sensitivity, which means that the insulin works more efficiently. In a study conducted in 2013 in New Zealand, were selected 46 men who received capsules with olive leaf extract or placebo for 12 weeks. Participants treated with olive leaf extract showed improvement in insulin sensitivity one percent. Many studies support the idea that olive leaf extract helps to regulate fluctuations in blood sugar.

Help in cancer prevention

One hundred years ago cancer in the United States, Russia, Japan and China were extremely rare whereas today it has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

In the early twentieth century, only 3 percent of the population in the United States had cancer. By 1950 this figure rose to 20 percent. To 2000 to 38 percent. Doctors predict that by 2020 cancer will be diagnosed in 50%, or every second person, at a certain stage of life. The main reason is improper diet and lack of physical activity. Environmental toxins that cause oxidation, also play a role. According to research, the nutrients such as olive leaf extract, can help in cancer prevention.

It is known that the extract of olive oil contains more polyphenols, which are the trace elements than olive oil cold pressed. Through laboratory study of 25 healthy donor cells received olive leaf extract, which resulted in enhancing anti-cancer activity of these cells.

In another study by the daily consumption of olive leaf extract for eight weeks it was observed the suppression of cancer genes. In other words, the cancer genes are “turned off”.

In the course of other studies have shown that polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties and is protected from DNA damage due to oxidation. It is with great certainty explains how olive leaf extract may help prevent the disease.

A study in the 2017 edition of Biomedicine and pharmacotherapy is showed that olive leaf extract may play a role in the treatment of a certain type of brain cancer called Fig or a glioblastoma multiforme. A study conducted in 2015, demonstrated the benefits of olive leaf extract in the destruction of mesothelioma cells, a type of lung cancer, whereas another preliminary study conducted the same year showed the possible benefits of the extract in the destruction of breast cancer cells. The results are preliminary, and before receiving the drug you should always consult with your doctor.

The function of the brain

It is expected that over the next few decades, the number of violations of brain activity will increase. Such violations, in particular, cause dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Healthy eating and physical activity are critical for maintaining brain health. The animal study conducted by the publication European Journal of Pharmacology, showed that olive leaf extract is also able to reduce the duration of complications after a stroke.

Antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties

The study, conducted by the Current edition of Medical Mycology in 2015, it was discovered that the olive leaf extract exhibits protivokashlevoe effect against Candida albicans. Candida albicans is a pathogenic yeast that are found on the skin and in the intestinal flora of man. In addition, the study of 2017, the results of which are published in the journal of Food Medicine showed that olive leaf extract has antibacterial properties against some strains of gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.

Skin health

A 2014 study that is described in the journal Cell Journal, evaluated the use of olive leaf extract in the treatment of skin diseases and wounds. In the process of animal studies mice were made full-thickness incision with a length of one centimeter, the remaining unprocessed (the wound was not sewn up). Some of the mice for seven days were subjected to local treatment with the use of olive leaf extract, while the other was used only distilled water. After reviewing the state of the wounds, it was discovered that the olive leaf extract, applied directly to a wound promoted healing of skin and wounds.

This can be useful in recovering from stab wounds and operations. In addition, thanks to its antioxidant properties, olive leaf extract may help prevent skin damage caused by cell damage. One study even proved that olive leaf extract may help protect the skin from aging.

Weight gain

Study 2014, results of which were published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that olive leaf extract may help in combating obesity due to the “off” genes that accumulate fat (thermogenesis). The results of the study confirm that the intake of olive leaf extract promotes weight loss.
