I recently received from the health insurance company a letter about my patient who is being treated for a very serious chronic disease. The insurance company was willing to pay the course of taking the Supplement with ginger to help the patient to reduce side effects of chemotherapy — nausea and vomiting. To the letter of the insurance applied research supporting these claims. I was intrigued, and I decided to find out more about ginger and its health benefits. And here’s what I found out.
What is ginger?
The scientific name of ginger is Zingiber officinale and its root is called Rhyzomus zingiberus. Ginger is a flowering plant native to Southeast Asia. Thick roots of ginger are traditionally used by doctors in China, India, Polynesia, and Africa.
Due to its beneficial properties ginger takes pride of place in Ayurvedic medicine and in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Its active ingredients are gingerol and shogaol. Natural ginger in its raw form contains the highest concentration of these molecules, but many raw ginger seems tasteless. So popular alternatives are the supplements and teas based on ginger.
Ginger for nausea and vomiting
The effect of ginger on nausea and vomiting, especially in the presence of cancer, very well researched. Research Dr. Abdul Aziz and his colleagues showed that ginger acts on the same parts of the brain, and highly effective antiemetic drugs, such as odansetron (zofran) and palonosetron (aloxi). The study showed that the ingestion of this medicinal plant has helped to reduce symptoms of nausea 40-50%.
Ginger and morning sickness
Up to 70% of women experience nausea during pregnancy. This is the most common symptom during the first 12 weeks, sometimes it lasts for up to 20 weeks. Prefer all natural, safe and effective medicine, so often the choice falls on the ginger. Conducted by Dr. Dean in 2012, a meta-analysis based on the data of 500 women from five separate studies have confirmed that ginger is not toxic to the fetus when taken in the recommended dosage 1000-4000 mg per day.

Ginger when rotavirus diarrhea and traveler
Ginger can be useful in the treatment of viral gastroenteritis, commonly known as rotavirus or stomach flu. In 2018, an Italian gastroenterologist Dr. Kanani has published an article indicating that the background intake of ginger in patients with rotavirus in children episodes of vomiting was reduced by 20%, and the total duration of the disease — by 28%. Similar studies conducted in the United States.
During trips to certain countries with some risk of getting bacterial diarrhea (another name — traveler’s diarrhea). This disease of the gastrointestinal tract is common throughout the world and is caused by an abnormal growth of the E. coli bacteria, which leads to frequent diarrhea and dehydration.
The toxin produced by these bacteria, binds to intestinal cells, resulting in the development of diarrhea. A recent study, Dr. Chen has shown that ginger may be contacted with the same target site in the intestine and block the action of a bacterial toxin, reducing the symptoms of diarrhea. According to Dr. Chen, ginger may be the best alternative for the symptomatic treatment of traveler’s diarrhea compared to drugs.
Ginger and diseases of the oral cavity
One of the biggest breakthroughs in the field of medical science has led us to the understanding that the health of the mouth are interconnected with the health of the entire body. Care of teeth and gums can have a positive impact on overall health. According to a study 2016, a mixture of ginger juice, rosemary and calendula as effectively eliminate bacteria in the oral cavity, as is known to all chlorhexidine.
Another study of Dr. Eslami and his team conducted in 2015, showed that ginger juice is an effective means of treatment associated with yeast fungi infections in the oral cavity. Probably this result is due to the natural antimicrobial properties of ginger.

However, based on the conducted research, it is possible to take ginger is in a dosage of from 2500 to 4000 mg per day.
Ginger for arthritis
Studies have shown that at any point in time, approximately one in three adults over 65 years of age suffers osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can not be cured and the best remedy for this disease in its current form — prevention and relief of symptoms.

Recommended dosage: 2500-4000 mg per day.
Ginger for diabetes
As the population worldwide is becoming fatter, and growing prevalence of diabetes. If this trend continues, every third modern child is at risk of developing diabetes. Many do not realize that diabetes is a disease which can lead to ischemic damage to many organs. The most common complications are cardiovascular disease and neurological complications. As you know, diabetes can cause complications in almost every organ system of the human body. Proposed mechanism of complications in diabetes are due to steadily high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.
The review by ginger, composed by Dr. Yee Ming Lee, reported about the ability of ginger to prevent development of a range of common complications of diabetes. According to Dr. Lee, studies on animals have shown that ginger helps control blood sugar levels. Rats treated with ginger supplements in high dosage (800 mg/kg, this dose is not recommended for humans), showed a significant reduction of blood sugar levels for 24-53% in comparison with a control population of rats with diabetes. The study also demonstrated that ginger protects the liver, kidneys, eyes and nervous system of diabetic complications such as fatty liver, kidney disease, neuropathy and cataract.
Diabetes can also be good habits related to lifestyle, for example, intermittent fasting and a diet low in carbohydrates.
